Satoshi Kon's acclaimed anime Paprika will have a limited run in Los Angeles' Laemmle's Grande 4-Plex movie theatre, showing every 10 am until next Sunday. This will make Paprika eligible for a 2006 Academy Award, and ensure that there will be a full slate of nominations this year. This is the first time since 2002 that the Best Animated Film award has 5 finalists.
There is no word on whether Paprika will have a wide release in theatres.
As I discussed here, there must be 16 candidates for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to nominate 5 finalists for the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar on February 25th. To do that, every film must have some sort of theatrical run in Los Angeles County before the end of December. Currently, every other finalist other than these two had a theatrical run. If Paprika and Arthur and the Minimoys had failed to do so, they would've been disqualified and there could have only been 3 finalists for the Animation Oscar.
Now that both flicks are both having their theatre runs, this means that they, plus Warner Bros.' The Ant Bully, Paramount's Barnyard: The Original Party Animals, Disney/Pixar's Cars, Universal's Curious George, Fox's Everyone's Hero, DreamWorks/Aardman's Flushed Away, Fox/Warner Bros.' Happy Feet, Fox's Ice Age: The Meltdown, Sony's Monster House, Sony Picture Animation's Open Season, DreamWorks' Over The Hedge, The Weinstein Company's Renaissance, Warner Independent Picture's A Scanner Darkly and Disney's The Wild are also up for Oscars.
The winner will be announced during the Oscar telecast on February 25th.
