When it comes to anime, Hayao Miyazaki is still king.
In an online poll at Anime News Network, the 65-year-old director (Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away) won with 26.6% of all 3,834 votes cast. Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop) took a distant 2nd with 9.4% of the vote. The other members of the Top 5 were Satoshi Kon (Millennium Actress) with 8.8%, Hideaki Anno (Grave of the Fireflies) with 7.9% and Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) with 3.7%.
15.8% of voters said it was "too hard to decide" who was their #1, while 5.1% claimed their favourite director wasn't even on the list.
ANN drew up the contestants from those who had directed 2 or more animes, and directed at least one anime from ANN's Top 50 list.
