Disney releases Song of the South?

controversial movie may get DVD release

Walt Disney's 1946 movie Song of the South may get released onto DVD. The movie was heavily criticized for its portrayal of blacks.

Will Disney release Song of the South onto DVD? Disney CEO Robert Iger isn't counting it out.

"The question of Song of the South comes up periodically, in fact it was raised at last year's annual meeting," Iger said at Disney's shareholders' meeting on March 13th. "And since that time, we've decided to take a look at it again because we've had numerous requests about bringing it out. Our concern was that a film that was made so many decades ago being brought out today perhaps could be either misinterpreted or that it would be somewhat challenging in terms of providing the appropriate context."

This was in direct contrast to last year's statement, when Iger categorically stated that Disney would not release the film.

Despite being Disney's first live-action hit (it was actually a hybrid of live-action and animation), Song of the South has never been released on home video. It follows the story of Johnny, a white boy who goes to live on his grandparents' Georgia plantation when his parents split up. There, he meets Uncle Remus, an older worker on the plantation, who tells him black folk tales about Brer Fox, Brer Bear and Brer Rabbit.

A hit when it first came out in 1946 ("Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" won the Oscar for Best Song and actor James Baskett received an honorary award for his portrayal of Uncle Remus), later generations criticized Song of the South's portrayal of African Americans as happy plantation workers, content with their lot in the segregated southern United States.

Despite this, several fan sites exist, the largest being www.songofthesouth.net, run by California IT administrator Christian Willis. As of March 13th, Willis had 114,887 signatures, petitioning that Disney bring the movie onto DVD. Copies of the film regularly sell for $50 to $90, and sometimes more than $100.

Some prominent blacks, like Disney veteran animator Floyd Norman, think the Song of the South controversy is overblown.

In an essay for Jim Hill Media, Norman (who was the only black animator at Disney during the 40's and 50's) said, "many African Americans still love Disney's Song of the South. Although some might call these comical images racially insensitive, I merely see them as funny."

In the 62 years, since Song of the South was first released, many changes have occurred. Right now, millions of children are being deprived of seeing a very entertaining child's movie. I saw it, when I was 8 years old, and I was tuned into the stories being told and nothing else. Adults spoiled it then and apparently are doing so now. Let Disney put the movie on DVD and I am willing to bet people will buy because it is a light hearted movie for kids. Tank You.

I was 8 years old also, when this movie was released. I loved it!
Who can resist singing "Zip a dee doo da" while on the flume ride
at Disneyland? It sticks in your head all day! I have been asking
at video stores for years, where I can buy it. My grandkids would
love the Brer Rabbit-Brer Bear-Brer Fox cartoons. And the 2 kids
listening to the stories told by Uncle Remus are wonderful! I'm all
for a DVD release-and soon, PLEASE!

I have to be very honest & go by with what others are saying. Look at all these humdrum movies out today. "Gone With The Wind," to name a fiew of the most, beloved movies, but to name a fiew of the worst, humdrum movies, there is "Peter Pan" because they call the Indians by the name, "Ingians." "Davy Crockett" has the same theme with that, too. There is also "Titanic," "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas," & "The Notebook" all with the theme behind those movies, that people have died at the end. To name a fiew movies with the central theme of racism, there are movies, like "The Story Of Rosa Parks." Actually, that really is a movie, involving racism, while "Song Of The South" is really not, at least from hearing from some of the books from a collection of the "Uncle Remus" books. Going on with that, I've never heard any of these books say the "N" word & I've just read some of these books in the collection of books. All I've ever heard was pure, Southern dialect & lots of humor. So no, it was probably never a movie that would be involving racism. So why not release it? I'm not Black, but I should say that somewhere in the Constitution & in the Bill Of Rights, that I've every right to petition & that's what I'm going to do! This is rediculous! Why don't they ban the insulting, racial movies, like "Davy Crockett" because they call the Indians "Ingians" instead of their official names, which are "Native Americans?" What the heck? Look at how society is treating Blacks and Mexicans today. Personally, I think that James Basket, Bobby Driskle, Hattie McDaniel, & Luana Patten & the whole cast of the "Song Of The South" are all wonderful people. I'm not just saying that because we have a Black President, running our country, but because not very, many people take this movie as nice, but rather mean & wishing it be banned from the US for many generations to come & I'm not going to let that happen!! I'd 1st started hearing the name of it when I'd left High School. I'd 1st started knowing that the song, "Zipadeedoodah" was from that movie during my 1st year of colige. After my 2nd year, I'd started collecting some of the books of "Uncle Remus." Going back to the movie, I've never seen it before & roomer has it that when I've asked Google, it said, "2039!" I may not be around! I'd like to see it before I die. I have an ill friend that doctors say she may not make it. She'd love seeing it before she dies soon. My Email is "Kbluebird1013@aol.com" to rite me. Thanx so much!!!

I recently saw Song of the South again. The money that I paid went to some bootlegger, unfortunately, because Disney hasn't released the film to DVD. I'd far rather have a top-quality, official Disney DVD of the movie, of course!

All this talk of racism is such PC nonsense! James Baskett, as the old slave Uncle Remus, is beautiful, dignified and moving. To suggest that he shows black Americans in a bad light is outrageous and disingenuous!

Uncle Remus has a leading and pivotal role in the film, whereas the mother of the Bobby Driscoll character is a tiny, incidental role by comparison. Should white Americans complain that the film has trivialised them? LOL!

So many movies in current release show black Americans as foul-mouthed, brutal gangsters whose vocabulary consists largely of that 'MF word'. Yet, somehow the charming and endearing James Baskett is an inappropriate characterisation? Do me a favour!

I agree that Song of the South should be released on DVD. When it came out I was seven and I remember the cartoons the wonderful old black man that told the stories to the children. I was thinking, how nice it would be to have someone tell me stories like that. Zip a Dee Doo Da was a favorite song and when I had my four children I was able to purchase a book about Song of the South. My children and grandchildren still like to hear the stories. It would be wonderful if they could see the movie.

I am a 45 year old bi-racial woman. My mother is Polish and my father was Afriacan-American. One of my favorite childhood memories was my mother taken my brothers and sister and I to see, Song of the South. For many years I was waitng for it to show up on TV or even back on the big screen. It saddens me even to this day to see how such a great movie can be so disgarded. I know plenty of African-Americans who I grew up with who feel the same way I do. We took only the good from the movie and nothing else matter. I hope a pray that this wonderful movie gets release on DVD. I want too share this movie with my children. I know they will love it the same as I do.

I believe Disney should release it. It was such a good movie that I remember to this day seeing it in the theater in the 1970s. I suppose it was a re-showing. I never took it as a bad portrayal of blacks. The setting was in a time when blacks were slaves. To me Uncle Remus was the hero in the story.

I have been looking for this movie for years. I have even made a request on the Disney site to have this movie released. I think Disney should really consider releasing it because, in researching information on and availability of this movie, there are boot-leg copies being sold already. Disney is losing money. Please release this movie on DVD!!!

YES DEFINATELY!!!! Song of the South has been kept from the public for far too long. My personal opinion has always been that it was hight hypocritical of Disney to build one of Disney's most popular rides based on this movie. I saw it in the theaters in 1986 I believe when it was released again for the time. I consider myself highly lucky to have been able to see it on the big screen. It has good characters, excellent music (like Zip-A-Dee Doo Dah) and should be released!

I hope you really consider releasing "Song of the South" DVD. It was one of my favorites, and it was enlightening to the heart. I don't think anyone would consider it racist. It is our past, and we have learned from it, and the music was absolutely beautiful along with the animation. It was truly a classic. I took pictures when it came on TV when I was small because I was so fascinated with the movie. I still have those to this date. I also still have my Disney record with the songs on the vinyl. Please release it for those who grew up with it truly would appreciate it, and it would be great for generations to come. It has several lessons that can be learned from this animation film. I love Uncle Remus. He made my heart sing!

It's now time this film was released. It is a wonderful film which has been away for too long. Robert Iger needs to take a long hard look at what the buying public want and NOT what he thinks they want. I love the older disney films- i think that the Hannah montanna and Jonas brothers franchises are absolute rubbish and don't do diney any justice. This film is due for public domain in 2039, and if disney haven't released it by then, someone else will. They know that bootleg copies are openly sold but do nothing about it. If they officially released it, the money they'd make would be huge- in the UK the videos are going from £15+ new so if you've got a PAL video it's worth a look. I only hope that it is released one day. As for the racism content, i've never seen a problem with it.

I remember seeing this movie as a child. I have been looking for this movie for years and am very disappointed that I can not find it anywhere. It was a teriffic movie no matter what your race, the stories were great and so was the music. The song Zip a dee doo dah has stayed in my head since I was a child and it leaves you with a happy feeling. I am 62 years old and would love to see this movie again in my lifetime. Please release it again for everyone of all races to enjoy.

I'm sorry to burst everyone's bubble on here but I really think the only reason everyone is so obsessed with this movie is because they can't see it.

I strongly urge them to release it on DVD so that my children will get to experience such a wonderful & wholesome show. I loved it as a child and would love to see it again as an adult. We need more shows like this, where you don't have to worry about the "F" word flying out of somebody's mouth every few seconds. Why in the world writers feel that this word being said so often or even at all in my book, helps sell a movie is beyond me. I and many others will not watch a movie if this vulgar language is in it, no matter how good the movie itself is. If I'm told ahead of time this word is in the movie, I will not get it, if I find out by starting to watch it, I will pop it out of my DVD player and take it back. You can make all kinds of good movies w/o such a word being in it. This is my opinion on both subjects, Song of the South coming to DVD and about other nasty movies with the "F" word. Thank you!!

Release the film already, if you do not like it then don't buy it that is how stuff should censored. The film is great - I saw it in the early 70's re-relese and have the laserdisc. How does GWTW get released when it basically has the same characterzations???

We are ruining our country with Political Correctness where people call for people to get fired if they say the wrong thing etc what happened to freedom of speech?

So again to deprive the collectors who want to own this classic film because people might protest - release the film and people who support it will buy it people who don't-won't end of story!

My question is how can Disneyland devote an entire ride (Splash Mountain) to the characters from Song of the South, yet not release the movie on DVD? There is a whole generation of children going on this ride, singing along to "Zip a dee doo da" and not having a clue who Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear are. Unfortunately, these children are missing out on a great movie. This was one of my favorite Disney movies from my childhood, filled with many memorable characters, including Uncle Remus. Disney shouldn't bow to the few cynics out there and ignore the masses who want a piece of their childhood back. This movie should have been out on Blue Ray by now.

I think that this movie is no more contraversial than any other movie.I saw this movie at the theatre when I was a child.I find that it is a very heart warming movie.Everybody deserves the right to see this movie. There are movies like ROOTS that show the slaves being sold into slavery and being beaten.Song Of The South is not a violent film.I beg of Disney to put it on the market and let people judge for themselves.

I'm 18 years old and have loved this movie since before I can remember! ! I don't get it when people say that the movie is racist because lets face it no child is going to watch this movie and concentrate on the live action part of the movie. There are soo many movies out there that use slavery and the seperation of different cultures as their main storyline, so why should the song of the south be criticised for something that has been done for years! ! ! The Song of The South is my favorite movie of all time yet i can't share it with any of my friends because they haven't got a clue which movie i am talking about let alone watched it.

I consider myself so very fortunate to have been part of the era
To see SONG OF THE SOUTH! Was able to share with my daughters. Unfortunately,
My grand children and great grand children have not had the blessing of this.
I would think those sensitive to portrayal of blacks, there are many movies that undermine the
Creditability and integrity that should be banned, but not
Song of the South. Please release so I can be part of sharing this
Wonderful movie with my grandiose and great grandson.

I saw the movie at the theater as a child with my parent and siblings. We all loved it then and i'm sure my grandkids would love it today.I'd be just as happy if DISNEY RERELEASED IT AT THE THEATERS AGAIN AND WOULD PAY THE ABSORIDANT PRICES THE THEATERS CHARGE JUST TO BE ABLE TO SEE IT AGAIN MYSELF JUST TO SEE MY GRANDKIDS FACES LIGHT UP WHEN uNCLE rEMUS TELLS HIS TALES OF BRAIR RABBIT,BRAIR FOX,BRAIR BEAR AND TAR BABY.Anybody that says this beutiful classic film is predudis is retarded.it's about an old man that tells a few harmless tales to comfort a small child in a time of turmoil.and about a small child that finds a friend that can kind of understand what he's going through.

Song Of The South is a wonderful film. The portrayal of Uncle Remus was outstanding. As far as to the comments of a negative nature toward blacks, I see a positive portrayal. The white children were drawn to him, they learned from him. Why is there no protests toward current films which portray black men as animals and black women as 'ho's. The language in these films is atrocious, and yet no one seems to be offended by this. This is from a black man who has lived his entire life in the deep south. I'm Southern and proud,
