Even though the final episode of Afro Samurai hasn't yet aired on Spike TV, FUNimation has already announced that they will release the blaxploitation anime on DVD, May 22. Not only that, there will be a "director's cut" of the series, which should feature even more blood, guts and decapitations.
There's as yet no word on what extras will be on the Afro Samurai DVD but, considering its $19.98 MSRP, I'm expecting that this will be a bare-bones affair (or the first of a double-dip).
Afro Samurai is based on the manga by Takashi Okazashi. It was co-produced by Samuel L. Jackson (who voices the titular role). The soundtrack is written and performed by Wu-Tang Clan mastermind RZA (and features Big Daddy Kane, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip and GZA), and the Koch Records CD comes out today.
So remember, kids: nothin' says lovin' more than cyborgs and samurai swords.
Fun Fact: Gonzo forked out $1 million per episode of Afro Samurai, a record for the company.
